The number of CNC machines throughout the world has grown dramatically as they have become established as state-of-the-art equipment for milling, drilling, grinding, tapping, honing, turning and other operations critical to manufacturing. These machines can cost up to $200,000 each, and are designed to run 24/7 in a demanding, often grueling work environment.
Fires in CNC machines are commonplace. Using oil-based coolants, typically combustible petroleum or mineral oil, flash fires are reported as a “fireball” when oil mist is ignited.
Machine fires can be catastrophic for the operator, cause expensive down time, costly repairs, possible human injury, and damage to the plant and equipment. Fire protection of CNC and other machine tools is critically important. While sprinklers are often required by insurance, they will only control the spread of a fire throughout a plant.
Stat-X generators are a compact, economical and reliable fire extinguishing solution for protecting the CNC machine and operator. A Stat-X unit consists of an extremely rugged, sealed, stainless steel canister containing a stable, solid compound. What is Stat-X?
The Stat-X compound is the most effective fire-extinguishing agent currently available – many times more effective than conventional agents by mass. The Stat-X First Responder contains the same compound used in the fixed Stat-X generators. The Stat-X First Responder works by interrupting the chain reaction of the fire. Potassium radicals are the main active component of the Stat-X aerosol. These potassium radicals react with the free radicals of the flame, which results in suppression. Stat-X does not deplete the oxygen level nor does it deplete the ozone layer or contribute to global warming.
Stat-X First Responders
The Stat-X First Responders are an innovative new tool that can be used in a variety of circumstances. The handheld generators are designed to deploy quickly – by simply twisting the ring pin to release the safety clip, pulling the ring pin and then tossing the First Responder into the fire. The fire suppression agent releases in 5 seconds.
Stat-X First Responder use by Police and Firefighters
There are many circumstances when police and firefighters would benefit from Stat-X First Responders. For any emergency worker who is the first on scene of a fire, Stat-X First Responders are an effective way to address a fire while waiting on additional resources to arrive. Especially for vehicle fires where the First Responder can knockdown the fire entirely.
Stat-X First Responders are also an effective way to address potential flashover when water isn’t available yet. The Stat-X First Responder can be tossed ahead of the firefighter to eliminate many of the contributing factors of flashover.
The Stat-X First Responder can be used in situations where firefighters or civilians are trapped due to an intense area of fire. Tossing the First Responder into the flames will provide immediate fire suppression.
Fires or explosions occur in manholes when CO, sewer gas, or natural gas ignites in the confined space of the underground system. A fire in a utility manhole can cause loss of life, extended system downtime, and equipment destruction.
Manhole fires are especially likely during the winter in areas where salt is used on roadways and sidewalks. The melting snow and salt filters into manholes and coating the underground electrical wiring and equipment. This salt-water mix is very corrosive and causes the wiring, transformers, and other elements of the underground electrical delivery system to deteriorate sometimes resulting in arcing exposed wires. The arcing, burning wire generates various toxic and combustible gases including high concentrations of carbon monoxide and neoprene gas, which are contained in the noxious smoke billowing out of the manhole during a manhole fire – a smoke that can itself ignite.
Because these are electrical fires and saltwater is an electrical conduit, water should not be used as an extinguishant. Flowing water into a burning manhole could result in electrocution of the firefighters on the line, and could cause an explosion. It could also force the CO in the hole through conduits to other manholes or structures.
One option for extinguishing manhole fires is an aerosol fire extinguishant such as Stat-X. There are several options for addressing manhole fires with Stat-X including first responder emergency fire suppressors and fixed systems.
Fixed Stat-X systems can be installed in manholes to activate by heat. The size of the Stat-X generators is determined by the cubic volume of the manhole. The generators are bracketed near or at the top of the manhole, aimed down to discharge and completely flood the space with the extinguishant. There are Stat-X systems which are capable of withstanding flooding that may occur in a manhole. These systems utilize a NEMA 6P rated enclosure and seal tight conduit to protect the panel from water intrusion due to occasional full submersion.
First Responder Stat-X systems are compact generators designed to be tossed into a burning manhole. The Stat-X fire suppressant is safe to be used in enclosed spaces with individuals present, so if a utility worker happens to be in the manhole when the fire ignites a Stat-X First Responder unit can be dropped into the manhole immediately. The First Responder unit will immediately suppress or extinguish the fire without harming the trapped worker.

Maintenance & Inspections of Stat-X Systems
Inspections are an important, and required, part of any Life Safety system. You should have your Stat-X systems inspected twice a year. Your Life Safety Partner will examine the generators and protected space to ensure that the generators and mounting brackets, straps, and associated hardware have not been damaged.
It is also important that the system installation and space remain in the same configuration as that originally designed, so that the Stat-X generator can function properly and distribute the aerosol efficiently in the event of a fire. If the generators have been bumped by maintenance or other workers, they will be re-aligned to the correct position for effective discharge. In addition, your Inspector will check the protected space to ensure access to the hazard areas, lines of egress, and manual pull stations are unobstructed.
Electrically activated systems will have the detection and control system, including all ancillary devices, at the same time your generators are inspected. All Stat-X generators have been UL approved for a service life of 10 years.
